What are TMJ and TMD?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is located near the ear, where your jawbone and skull meet. This joint moves whenever you eat, drink, speak, swallow, or yawn.
Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) occur when the joint becomes inflamed, damaged, or displaced through stress, trauma, clenching, and teeth grinding.
Symptoms of TMD include frequent or severe headaches, facial pain, jaw pain, and an inability to completely open or close your mouth. You may also experience clicking and popping of the joint.
Additional problems caused by TMJ dysfunction include neck and facial pain, limited head movement, flattening of teeth, and loss of vertical facial height.
